“My goal is to see those we serve as HE sees them – fully worthy of love and hope, with unique potentials and strengths that can bring wholeness and health to their communities”

Our Story

During a mission presentation at our church, I was convicted that one day I would serve in missions, particularly, in Africa. Several years later as a youth group leader, I went on several mission trips both national and international.  During these trips, I saw the many needs of 3rd world countries.  So often, those living in these countries feel inferior, unworthy, and hopeless. Finally, 20 years later I embarked on my first trip to Kenya. I fell in love with not only the country, but the people there.

On that first trip, we spent considerable time with the women, listening to their stories, and their prayer requests. The main desire was to find a way to buy livestock and land in order to provide food for their families. I flew back to the States with a list of needs that seemed impossible for a group of women in a remote 3rd world country with no transportation, or electricity.  I knew I needed to do more than pray and talk about it….I needed to do something. I went back the next year praying God would show me a way, and He did.

Over the next 2 to 3 years, we encouraged the women, shared God’s amazing love for them, and taught them how to make paper beads and bracelets.  These women not only learned how to cut, measure, and make paper beads, but they also found a way to Nairobi to request government recognition as a group. They chose the name “Mwihoko” which means hope in Kikuyu. Along with a donation from 410 Bridge for their hard efforts and the money they made, they were able to purchase land and start a large produce garden. They were also able to build a small meeting place. Sometimes just showing up and showing someone they are loved and worthy will spark a new hope and desire to achieve greater things.

After 8 trips to Kenya and 2 to South Africa, I knew I needed to continue serving there, raise money, increase awareness, and provide trips so others could participate. Thus, Upendo318 was founded. Upendo in Swahili means love; 318 is for 1 John 3:18 “Let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.”  I have been blessed with 3 incredible women who, like myself, love the Lord, Kenya, and helping others who will be joining me on this venture. We each have different strengths and talents to contribute.  We realize there are many existing ministries that are reaching the various needs of the communities.  Our desire is to partner with these ministries that are already having a great impact. We will provide hands & feet-on-the-ground support as well as financial support and a broader audience. While showing love and truth is part of our mission, meeting the needs of the community is our primary goal.

My goal is to see those we serve as HE sees them – fully worthy of love and hope, with unique potentials and strengths that can bring wholeness and health to their communities.
